The only thing I miss about the SB cards is the free built-in General Midi synth. U have racks of hardware synths, some of which do General Midi, but patching and configuring them just for a quick demo is a pain. It won't match your VST plugin or MIDI instrument if it's not using the General MIDI mapping (which is likely). For some devices, the patch number also selects the drum kit for drum channels. On Windows, to hear these sounds as General MIDI instruments, load a Fruity LSD plugin into the mixer and set it to the same port number as the MIDI Out. I understand that there even is a 64 Bit VST, but also the 32 Bit VST should simply work via the VST Bridge built in Reaper. In another Thread I did several tests with several General Midi instruments and found (the old DXi-) SoundCanvas to be the better than any free Soundfont I found. At the bottom is O for output. It currently seems to be going to the Microsoft General Midi Wavetable. Click on the drop-down and select SI-Drums. Now do the same thing for the bass MIDI, except use the SI-Bass Guitar.
Windows 7 no longer has the old Microsoft GS Wavetable synth and I didn't really care because it's not something I needed but recently I downloaded a .mid file and I'd like to hear it with all the correct instruments in each track (if that makes sense).Sonar has this little DXi that has all the regular 128 general MIDI instruments in it that sounds kind of like the regular Microsoft GS Wavetable synth. Is there a free VST that does the same thing?
This .mid file has 16 tracks and I don't want to hunt down which instrument to assign to all 16 of them when I could just stick in a VST that already knows what GM Program 73 is (for example) and assigns the correct instrument to it.
